New Windsor, the setting: Hudson River to the east, level neighborhoods at the center, then rolling hills and pastoral scenes to the west. You'll note when reading the history of other areas around Orange County comments to the effect of "Washington slept here...." overnight or for some notably brief time. In New Windsor there is no doubt that ol' George was here for an extended run at the end of the Revolutionary War with the final encampment of the Continental Army over the winter of 1782-3. The sleeping part, though? Not so much here as George made his permanent stay at the Jonathan Hasbrouck house in Newburgh, six miles away. 120 acres of the original 1600 acre 'cantonment' is preserved as a State Historic site.
New Windsor is a town without it's own school district. The northeast section of town uses the Newburgh Schools, and the southeast the Cornwall Schools. Location The Town of New Windsor NY is located along the eastern border of Orange County, with Cornwall to the south and Newburgh to the north. To the west are the towns of Montgomery (northwest) and Hamptonburgh (west).
Commuting from New Windsor To NYC: By auto, the drive time to the George Washington Bridge varies quite a bit depending on where in the town you decide to settle: there are three distinct routes from New Windsor into the city. NYS-208 to NYS-17 to I-87, Route 32 south to I-87, and then Route 9W south to the Palisades Parkway to either the GWB or I-87 across the Tappan Zee and into the city. I-84 to the north will take you to Poughkeepsie and Connecticut, with Routes NYS-300, NYS-32, and US-9W leading you to I-84.
Public Transit Metro-North Train stations are in nearby Beacon (across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge) with the Hudson Line into Grand Central Station, and Salisbury Mills off of NYS-04 with the Port Jervis line into Secaucus NJ and Penn Station in NYC. The Short Line bus leaves from Vails Gate, both with service into Northern New Jersey and into Mid-Town Manhattan's Penn Station.
Homes for Rent in New Windsor NY The availability of homes for rent in New Windsor NY is quite high right now, as owners who have been relocated to other parts of the county have held onto their NY properties - not able to sell them for what they paid for them, so they rent them out instead. Some great rental opportunities are available now as a result.
Homes for Sale in New Windsor NY The area continues to build new homes and condos, and with the building that was done in the early part of the first decade, there are plenty of newer homes available for purchase ongoing. Homes are also available in all price ranges above $100,000, so first time buyers now have some choices. Values have dropped in the past two or three years, and are expected to remain that way for some time, along with historic lows in mortgage interest rates. The prices will probably hold at the current low values, but not so certain is where the mortgage market will eventually go.
